Niacinamide Serum in Pakistan: What It Does and How to Use It

Niacinamide has quietly become the most recommended ingredient in skincare, and for once the hype is close to the evidence. It is also one of the easiest actives to get wrong, mostly because people buy the highest percentage they can find and then wonder why their skin is unhappy.

What niacinamide actually does

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3. In skincare, the effects with the strongest research behind them are:

  • Barrier support. It helps skin produce ceramides (Boo, Antioxidants, 2021: review of niacinamide), which is why it tends to make skin more resilient rather than more sensitive.
  • Oil control. It can reduce how much oil the skin produces, which over weeks makes pores look less stretched.
  • Evening out tone. It interferes with pigment transfer to surface skin cells, which helps with post-acne marks and general unevenness.
  • Redness. It has a calming effect that shows up reliably in studies on sensitive and reactive skin.

What it does not do: it does not shrink pore size permanently, because pore diameter is largely genetic. It makes pores look smaller by reducing the oil and debris that stretch them. That is a real cosmetic result, honestly described.

Which percentage should you buy?

This is where most of the money gets wasted. The research that people cite for niacinamide's benefits mostly used concentrations between 2% and 5%. Higher percentages are not proportionally better, and above about 10% a meaningful number of people get flushing, stinging or small bumps.

If you are new to it, start in the 4-5% range. If you have sensitive skin, start lower and use it every other day for the first fortnight. The 10% products that dominate the shelves are not a scam, but they are aimed at a smaller group than their sales suggest.

Where niacinamide fits for Pakistani skin

Two things make niacinamide particularly useful here. First, heat and humidity through much of the year mean oil control is a genuine daily concern for a lot of people. Second, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — the brown marks acne leaves behind — is more pronounced and longer-lasting in deeper skin tones, and niacinamide is one of the gentler tools for that.

If open pores and shine are your main complaint, the Pore Minimizer Serum for Open Pores (see current price) is built around this ingredient, and our longer piece on how to make large pores look smaller covers the full routine. For daytime, the BB Cream with SPF 15 and niacinamide (see current price) folds it into a step you are doing anyway.

How to use it

Niacinamide is one of the least fussy actives:

  1. Cleanse and pat skin until it is barely damp.
  2. Apply three to four drops of serum to the whole face.
  3. Follow with moisturizer, and sunscreen if it is morning.

It works morning or night. Once daily is plenty for most people; twice is fine if your skin tolerates it.

What it mixes with

There is a persistent internet claim that niacinamide and vitamin C cannot be used together. In practice, modern formulations layer fine, and millions of people use both daily without issue. If you find the combination stings, use vitamin C in the morning and niacinamide at night — but do not avoid one because of a forum post. We compared the two properly in niacinamide vs vitamin C.

Niacinamide pairs especially well with:

  • Salicylic acid, for oily and acne-prone skin — the acid clears the pore, niacinamide reduces what refills it. Our Salicylic Acid Face Wash (see current price) is the low-effort way to add this.
  • Retinol, where niacinamide's barrier support offsets some of retinol's dryness.
  • Sunscreen, which protects any tone work you are doing.

What a niacinamide serum costs in Pakistan

Niacinamide is an inexpensive raw material, which is why you can find serums from a few hundred rupees upward. What you are paying for above that is formulation quality: whether the pH is right, whether it is packaged to stay stable, what else is in the bottle, and whether the brand actually tests what it sells.

Realistically, a well-made niacinamide serum in Pakistan sits somewhere between PKR 1,500 and 3,500 at the time of writing. Ours sits in that range: see the current price. Below roughly PKR 800, be sceptical about what else is in the formula — the niacinamide is cheap, but the base, preservation and testing are not.

Signs it is working, and signs it is not

Working, after four to eight weeks: less midday shine, pores that look less obvious in daylight, post-acne marks fading slightly faster than they used to, and calmer-looking skin overall.

Not working: stinging on application, small bumps in the first two weeks, or facial flushing. All three usually mean the percentage is too high for you, not that niacinamide is wrong for you. Drop to a lower concentration or a lower frequency before giving up on the ingredient.

As with any new product, patch-test on your inner forearm for 24 hours first. If you are pregnant or being treated for a skin condition, check with a dermatologist before adding actives — this is general information, not medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

Is 10% niacinamide better than 5%?

Not for most people. The strongest evidence sits in the 2-5% range, and higher concentrations raise the chance of flushing and irritation without a proportional benefit.

Can I use niacinamide and vitamin C together?

Yes. The idea that they cancel each other out comes from old research on unstable raw forms, not modern formulas. If your skin objects, split them between morning and night.

How long until niacinamide works on pores?

Four to eight weeks of consistent daily use before oil and pore appearance change noticeably. It is a slow, steady ingredient rather than a dramatic one.

Can niacinamide be used on acne-prone skin?

Yes, and it is one of the better choices, because it addresses oil and post-acne marks at the same time without the irritation that stronger actives can cause.

Morning or night?

Either. Pick the time you will actually remember, and keep it consistent.
