How to Remove Dark Spots from Face: The Honest Guide
Quick answer: To remove dark spots from the face, first identify the type: post-acne marks, sun spots or melasma. Then use vitamin C in the morning, daily SPF 30 or higher, and gentle glycolic acid or retinol at night. Dark spots fade slowly, usually over 8 to 12 weeks, and return without sunscreen. Stubborn patches need a dermatologist.
You have tried the cream your cousin swore by. The spot is still there. Here is the part nobody told you: "dark spots" is three different problems wearing the same face - and each one fades with a different tool. Match the tool to the spot and skin responds; mismatch it and you can rub product in for a year for nothing.
What type of dark spot do you have?
- Post-acne marks (PIH). Flat brown or dark marks exactly where a pimple used to be. The most common kind in Pakistan, and the most fixable.
- Sun spots. Scattered small spots on cheekbones, nose, forehead - the areas the sun hits. They grew slowly and quietly.
- Melasma. Larger soft-edged patches, usually symmetrical on both cheeks or the upper lip, often hormonal. This one is the stubborn cousin - it needs its own plan: read our melasma guide.
Which dark spot, which tool?
| Type | How it looks | What helps most | EL TESSA option |
|---|---|---|---|
| Post-acne marks | Flat brown marks where a pimple was | Vitamin C by day, SPF, patience | EL TESSA Vitamin C Serum for Dark Spots |
| Sun spots | Small spots on cheekbones, nose, forehead | Daily SPF 60+, vitamin C, gentle exfoliation | EL TESSA SPF 60+ Sunblock |
| Melasma | Larger soft-edged patches on both cheeks or upper lip | Strict sun protection first; see our melasma guide and a dermatologist | EL TESSA Glutathione Serum for Pigmentation |
The one rule that applies to all three
Every dark spot is melanin responding to injury or light. Which means every day without sunscreen, your skin re-darkens the spot you are trying to fade. This is why people say "nothing works" - the fading and the re-darkening cancel out. SPF every morning is not a suggestion here; it is half the treatment. See our SPF 60+ Sunblock and the sunscreen guide.
What actually fades dark spots, and how long does it take?
- Vitamin C (mornings). Interrupts excess pigment production and brightens overall tone. Expect visible change in 6-10 weeks, not days. Our Vitamin C Serum; how to use it correctly is here.
- Niacinamide. Slows the transfer of pigment into skin cells - a quiet, well-evidenced worker, good for sensitive skin.
- Glycolic acid (2-3 nights a week). Lifts the stained surface layer so newer skin shows sooner. Our Glycolic Acid 7% Toner.
- Retinol (nights). Speeds the whole turnover cycle. Start slow - the beginner protocol matters.
Independent evidence for these ingredients is summarised well by the American Academy of Dermatology.
Why are my dark spots not fading?
- Picking or squeezing - every pick is a new spot ordered for next month.
- Lemon, toothpaste, "instant glow" home pastes - irritation makes pigment worse, not better.
- Using everything at once - a damaged barrier darkens faster than it fades. One or two actives, done consistently, beat five used chaotically.
- Quitting at week three. Pigment fades on skin's calendar - 8 to 12 weeks minimum - not the market's.
What is a simple dark spot routine?
Morning: gentle cleanse - vitamin C - moisturiser - SPF.
Night: cleanse - glycolic toner (2-3x/week) or retinol - moisturiser.
Photograph your face in the same light every two weeks; the camera sees fading before the mirror admits it.
