Why Your Acne Is Not Clearing: 7 Real Causes in Pakistan

EL TESSA Acne Clear Kit: Salicylic Face Wash, Acne Control Serum and Oil-Free Moisturizer side by side

Quick answer: Acne usually does not clear because of seven fixable habits: changing products too soon, mistaking purging for a reaction, over-washing, skipping moisturizer, skipping sunscreen, treating marks like pimples, and mixing too many actives. Pick one active, wash twice a day, moisturize, wear sunscreen, and judge it after eight weeks. Deep, painful acne needs a doctor.

This is the question we are asked more than any other, and it almost always contains the same sentence:

"I have tried everything."

That is the problem itself. Trying everything is not a treatment for acne - it is the single biggest reason acne does not clear.

Below are the seven causes we see repeatedly in real messages, and what actually works for each. No miracles. No "clear skin in seven days".

1. You never gave anything enough time

Salicylic acid, niacinamide and retinol all have real research behind them. They also share one problem: they work slowly.

The honest timeline, which we give every customer:

Week What happens
Week 1 Nothing. Genuinely nothing.
Weeks 2-3 Some people feel breakouts have increased (purging)
Weeks 4-6 Fewer new breakouts appear
Weeks 6-8 The real difference - the one visible in photographs
Week 12+ Marks begin to fade (a separate issue from breakouts)

If you change product after twelve days, you have only ever seen the first and worst phase, never the result. Four products a year means four separate week ones. Dermatologists say acne treatment can take several weeks to a few months to show a difference (American Academy of Dermatology: acne tips).

What to do: choose one thing and stay with it for a full eight weeks. We suggest starting with the Acne Serum with 2% Salicylic Acid, because salicylic acid dissolves in oil and therefore reaches inside a blocked pore.

2. Mistaking purging for a reaction

Seeing more breakouts in week two, people throw the product away. But the two things are different:

  • Purging: happens in the same places you always break out. Small spots, arriving and clearing quickly. Settles by week four to six. Keep going.
  • A reaction: appears in new places - cheeks, jaw, neck - with itching, burning or tight red patches. It does not settle on its own. Stop.

A free test: stop the new active for five days and use only face wash, moisturizer and sunblock. If skin improves, it was a reaction. If it continues as before, it was purging.

3. Breaking your skin by over-cleaning it

The most common mistake in Pakistani heat: washing three or four times a day, plus a scrub, plus a toner.

This does not reduce oil. It weakens the skin's own barrier, and skin responds by producing even more oil. Then come the stinging, the redness and fresh breakouts.

What to do: wash twice a day, morning and night, with a gentle cleanser (NHS: acne). That is all. The Salicylic Acid Face Wash is enough on its own; no scrub is needed. If you want to exfoliate, use the Glycolic Acid 7% Toner two or three nights a week only - and no retinol on those nights.

4. Skipping moisturizer because "my skin is oily"

This is the most expensive skincare myth in Pakistan. Oily skin still needs water. Skipping moisturizer increases oil rather than reducing it - and alongside salicylic acid or retinol it leaves skin tight and peeling.

What to do: a light, non-comedogenic moisturizer such as the Oil Free Moisturizer, applied straight after your active, every day.

5. Not wearing sunblock

This is part of the acne problem for two reasons:

  1. Salicylic acid, glycolic acid and retinol all make skin more sensitive to sunlight.
  2. The dark marks left behind after a breakout are deepened by sun exposure. That is why people say "the pimples went, but my face still does not look clear".

In Lahore or Karachi sun, using actives without sunblock is wasted money. Use the SPF 60+ Sunblock every morning, as the last step, cloudy or not.

6. Treating breakouts and marks as the same problem

They are two different issues needing two different products:

  • Active pimples: salicylic acid and niacinamide - work inside the pore.
  • Dark marks: a Vitamin C Serum in the morning under sunblock, plus patience. Marks take eight to twelve weeks to fade.

If you are applying an acne serum to old marks, the wait is pointless - it was never built for that job.

7. Using everything on the same night

Salicylic acid plus glycolic acid plus retinol in one night equals a damaged barrier. That is not faster treatment - it costs three to four weeks of recovery afterwards.

The simple rule:

  • Morning: face wash, then vitamin C if you use it, then moisturizer, then sunblock.
  • Night: face wash, then one active (salicylic OR glycolic OR retinol), then moisturizer.

Never more than one active in a night.

What if acne still does not clear?

Some acne does not clear with over-the-counter products - particularly deep, painful, cyst-like spots along the cheeks and jaw. That may be hormonal or cystic acne, and only a dermatologist can treat it properly with prescription medication.

We will say this plainly: if your breakouts are that kind, do not buy our serum. See a doctor first. Skincare can run alongside that treatment, but it cannot replace it.

Frequently asked questions

How long does salicylic acid take to work?

New breakouts start reducing around weeks four to six; a clear difference appears at weeks six to eight. Anyone claiming faster is selling, not treating.

Read next: how 2% salicylic acid actually works.

Can salicylic acid be used daily?

For most people yes - once at night, on clean dry skin, with moisturizer on top. If you get tightness or peeling, start every other day.

Salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide?

Salicylic acid is better for blocked pores, blackheads and oily skin. Benzoyl peroxide is stronger on red, inflamed spots but dries the skin and bleaches fabric. Starting with salicylic acid is usually easier.

Should I put toothpaste or lemon on a pimple?

No. Both disrupt the skin's pH and tend to leave irritation and darker marks behind. It is the most common home remedy in Pakistan and also the most damaging.

Should I buy all the products together?

No. One product, eight weeks. If you do want the full routine, the Acne Clear Kit includes wash, serum and moisturizer - but it is not necessary, and one serum is a perfectly good start.

How do I know the product is genuine?

With pay on delivery (COD) you can open the parcel in front of the courier. If the bottle is not sealed, return it on the spot - you pay at your door, not before.
