Open Pores Treatment: How to Make Large Pores Look Smaller

Green EL TESSA Pore Minimizer serum bottle beside a smooth grey stone

Quick answer: You cannot shrink pores for good, but you can make them look much smaller. Cleanse with salicylic acid, use a pore serum, exfoliate 2 to 3 nights a week, then moisturise and wear sunscreen every day. Nose pores often look smaller within weeks; cheek pores can take months.

Let us start with the part nobody selling you an "open pores cream" will admit: you cannot permanently shrink a pore. Pore size is largely genetic, the way your height is. There is no product in Pakistan or anywhere else that closes them for good.

What you absolutely can do is make them look dramatically smaller. Pores look big for three specific reasons, and two of those are fixable at home. This guide covers what works on large pores on the nose and cheeks, what order to do it in, and which popular remedies are wasting your money.

Why do pores look large?

A pore is just the opening of a hair follicle with an oil gland attached. It becomes visible when one of these happens.

1. It is full. Oil, dead skin and pollution collect inside and stretch the opening. When that plug meets air it oxidises and turns dark, which is what a blackhead is. This is the most common cause and the most fixable.

2. You produce a lot of oil. Higher oil output means wider pore openings. Genetics sets your baseline, and heat and humidity push it up. Anyone who has spent a July in Karachi knows their pores look worse there than they do in December.

3. The skin around it has lost firmness. Collagen acts like scaffolding holding the pore opening tight. As collagen drops with age and sun damage, pores sag and appear as ovals rather than dots, usually on the cheeks. This is why sun protection is a pore treatment even though it sounds unrelated.

So the honest goal is: keep pores empty, keep oil under control, and protect collagen. Do those three and pores become genuinely hard to see.

Large pores on the nose vs cheeks

They are not the same problem and they do not respond to the same thing.

Nose and centre of face Cheeks
Usual cause Congestion, blackheads, high oil Loss of firmness, sun damage, old acne
Shape Round dots, often dark Oval, teardrop, stretched downward
What helps most Salicylic acid, clay, niacinamide Retinol, glycolic acid, daily sunscreen
Speed of change 2 to 4 weeks 3 to 6 months

The routine that actually reduces the look of pores

Step 1: cleanse with salicylic acid

Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, which means it can get down inside a pore and dissolve the plug. Water-based cleansers just wash over the top. This is the single most useful change most people can make.

Salicylic Face Wash once a day, usually at night, is enough to start. Leave it on the skin for 30 seconds before rinsing so it has time to do something. If your skin is dry or sensitive, drop to every second day.

If you are very oily and prone to blackheads on the nose, Charcoal Face Wash is a good alternate-day partner. Charcoal and clay bind surface oil and grime without the stripping you get from harsh foaming cleansers.

Step 2: a pore-targeted serum

This is where niacinamide earns its reputation. It reduces oil output over time (Draelos et al., Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy, 2006), calms inflammation and supports the skin barrier, and those three together visibly tighten pore appearance (Boo, Antioxidants, 2021: review of niacinamide). Pore Minimizer Serum is built around this, applied morning or night on clean skin before moisturiser.

Expect the first real change at around week four. Niacinamide is slow and steady, not dramatic.

Step 3: exfoliate, but not the way you think

Physical scrubs with rough grains make pores look worse, and dermatologists advise against scrubbing (American Academy of Dermatology: face washing tips). They irritate skin, and irritated skin swells around the pore opening, which is the opposite of what you want. Put the apricot scrub down.

Chemical exfoliation is gentler and far more effective. Glycolic 7% Toning Solution two or three nights a week clears dead cells off the surface and, over months, helps with the loose, oval pores on the cheeks.

Never combine glycolic and retinol on the same night. Alternate them.

Step 4: moisturise, even if you are oily

This is the step oily-skinned people skip, and skipping it backfires. Strip your skin of moisture and it compensates by producing more oil, which fills pores faster. You need hydration without heaviness.

Oil-Free Moisturizer with a matte finish is designed for exactly this: hydration that does not sit greasy on the skin or block the pore you just cleared. Use it morning and night.

Step 5: sunscreen, every single day

Sun damage destroys the collagen holding your pores tight. Over a decade of unprotected sun in Pakistani conditions, that is the single biggest reason cheek pores stretch. SPF 60+ Sunblock every morning is not a bonus step, it is the one protecting all the work above.

What does not work for open pores?

  • Ice cubes and cold water. Cold constricts skin briefly and pores look tighter for perhaps twenty minutes. Nothing lasting happens. It is free, so use it before an event if you like, but it is not treatment.
  • Toothpaste, lemon juice and baking soda. All three wreck your skin barrier. Damaged barrier, more inflammation, more oil, bigger-looking pores. This is a reliable way to make things worse.
  • Pore strips. They pull out the top of the plug and leave the rest. The pore refills within days, and repeated use tears at the opening, stretching it further.
  • Squeezing. Pressing hard on your nose in front of a mirror pushes some contents out and drives the rest deeper, while inflaming the surrounding skin. The pore ends up more visible than when you started.
  • Steaming daily. Steam softens plugs so they clear more easily, and once a week is fine. Every day dehydrates skin and triggers more oil.
  • Any cream promising to "close pores permanently". Pore openings do not have muscles. Nothing closes them. A product claiming otherwise is telling you something false on the front of the bottle, which tells you what to expect from the rest of it.

How long does it take to see a difference?

Time What changes
Week 1 Skin feels less congested. Pores look the same.
Weeks 2 to 3 Blackheads on the nose visibly reduce. Less midday shine.
Week 4 to 6 Nose pores clearly smaller. Oil production lower.
Month 3 Skin texture smoother overall. Makeup sits better.
Month 6 Cheek pores start to look tighter. This one needs patience.

If a product promises smaller pores in a week, it is selling you the ice cube effect in a jar.

A simple daily plan

Morning Night
1. Gentle cleanse 1. Salicylic Face Wash
2. Pore Minimizer Serum 2. Glycolic Toning Solution (2 to 3 nights only)
3. Oil-Free Moisturizer 3. Oil-Free Moisturizer
4. SPF 60+ —

You do not need all of these on day one. Start with the face wash and the moisturiser, run that for two weeks, then add the serum. Adding five new products at once is how people end up with irritated skin and no idea which one caused it.

Common questions

What is the best serum for open pores?
Look for niacinamide as the main active rather than a long ingredient list. Niacinamide has the strongest evidence behind it for oil control and pore appearance. That is the basis of our Pore Minimizer Serum.

Can open pores be treated at home?
The appearance can be improved a lot at home. If pores are enlarged because of old acne scarring, in-clinic treatments such as microneedling will go further than anything topical.

Why are my pores worse in summer?
Heat and humidity increase oil production, so pores fill faster. Most people in Pakistan see a genuine seasonal swing between June and September.

Does drinking water help?
Stay hydrated for general health, but no, drinking more water does not shrink pores. What you apply to your skin matters more here.

Do I need to stop makeup?
No. Just remove it properly every night. Sleeping in foundation is one of the fastest ways to fill and stretch pores.
