Winter Skin Care Routine for Dry Skin in Pakistan
Quick answer: For dry winter skin in Pakistan, switch to a gentle cream or milk cleanser, wash with lukewarm water, apply moisturiser while your skin is still damp, and add a repair step at night. Keep wearing sunscreen every morning, even in winter. Make these swaps before November, not after your skin cracks.
Pakistani winters are harder on skin than most people expect. The air dries out, indoor gas heaters pull whatever moisture is left out of the room, showers get hotter, and in Lahore and much of Punjab the smog season lands on top of all of it. Skin that behaved perfectly well in September starts feeling tight, flaky and irritated by the middle of November.
The fix is not more products. It is a few specific swaps, made before the weather turns rather than after your skin is already cracked.
Why your skin changes in winter
Four things happen at once.
Humidity drops. Your skin barrier relies on moisture in the air. When outdoor humidity falls, water evaporates from your skin faster than it is replaced. This is called transepidermal water loss, and it is the main reason winter skin feels tight.
Heaters make it worse. A gas heater in a closed room can drop indoor humidity below 30 percent. You are effectively sitting in a dehydrator every evening.
Hot showers. Very hot water dissolves the lipids holding your skin barrier together. It feels wonderful for ten minutes in December and leaves you itching afterwards. That post-shower itch on your legs is not dryness, it is barrier damage.
Smog. From roughly November to January, particulate pollution across Punjab settles on skin, causes low-grade inflammation, and makes existing dryness and sensitivity noticeably worse. Cleansing properly at night matters more in these months than at any other time of year.
Swap one: a gentler cleanser
The cleanser that suited you in July is probably too strong for December. If your face feels tight within two minutes of drying it, that is your signal.
Move to a cream or milk texture. Rice Milk Face Wash cleans without stripping, which is what dry winter skin needs. Use lukewarm water, never hot, and pat dry rather than rubbing.
If you use a salicylic acid wash for acne, drop it to every second or third day through winter. You can go back to daily in March.
Swap two: apply moisturiser on damp skin
This costs nothing and makes a real difference. Moisturiser works partly by sealing in water that is already on your skin. Apply it right after washing, while your face is still slightly damp, and you trap that water instead of letting it evaporate (American Academy of Dermatology: tips for dry skin).
Most people dry their face completely, do something else for five minutes, then moisturise. By then there is nothing left to seal in.
Glow Cream with Vitamin C and Glutathione works well as a winter day cream because it is richer than a summer gel but still does brightening work while it sits there.

Swap three: add a repair step at night
Night is when skin does its barrier repair, and in winter it needs help. Night Repair Serum under your moisturiser gives the skin more to work with overnight.
If you already use retinol, winter is when people get into trouble with it. Retinol plus cold, dry air plus a heater is a reliable recipe for flaking. Two options: drop from nightly to two or three nights a week, or buffer it by applying moisturiser first and Retinol Night Cream on top. Do not stop retinol entirely just because it is winter, just slow down.

Do not drop sunscreen
This is the mistake almost everyone in Pakistan makes between November and February.
UVB, the burning wavelength, does drop in winter. UVA does not change much at all, and UVA is what drives pigmentation, collagen breakdown and ageing. It passes through cloud, smog and window glass. Skipping sunscreen for four months a year, every year, is a significant amount of accumulated damage.
If you have been working on melasma or dark spots all summer, winter is exactly when that progress gets quietly undone. Keep SPF 60+ in the routine. If your skin is dry, apply moisturiser first, wait two minutes, then sunscreen.

The winter routine, start to finish
| Morning | Night |
|---|---|
| 1. Rinse with lukewarm water, or a gentle cleanser | 1. Rice Milk Face Wash |
| 2. Serum on damp skin | 2. Night Repair Serum |
| 3. Glow Cream | 3. Retinol Night Cream (2 to 3 nights) or moisturiser |
| 4. SPF 60+ | — |
That is four steps in the morning and three at night. You do not need a ten-step routine. You need the right texture at the right time and consistency.
Things that help but have nothing to do with products
- Turn the shower temperature down. The single highest-impact change on this list. Lukewarm, and keep it under ten minutes.
- Put a bowl of water near the heater. A cheap way to raise room humidity. A humidifier is better if you have one.
- Moisturise your body straight out of the shower, not twenty minutes later. Same damp-skin principle as your face.
- On heavy smog days, wash your face when you get home rather than waiting until bedtime. Particulates sitting on skin for six hours cause avoidable irritation.
- Stop licking chapped lips. Saliva evaporates and takes more moisture with it. It is why they get worse through the day.
- Change your pillowcase weekly. Cheap, and it matters more when skin is already compromised.
Do not forget everything below your chin
Most winter skincare advice stops at the jawline, which is why so many people have a well-managed face and badly cracked hands.
Hands. They get washed far more often than your face and almost never moisturised afterwards. Keep a cream near the sink, not in a drawer. If your knuckles are cracking, apply a thick layer at night and sleep in cotton gloves for a week.
Lips. Chapping starts with dehydration and gets locked in by licking. Apply balm before bed, not just when they hurt. If your lips crack at the corners repeatedly through winter, that can point to a B-vitamin or iron deficiency and is worth mentioning to a doctor.
Legs and arms. That itch after a hot shower is barrier damage, not dry air alone. Lower the water temperature and apply moisturiser within a minute of getting out. Scratching makes it worse, and broken skin in winter heals slowly.
Heels. Cracked heels get much worse from December onward, especially if you walk barefoot on cold floors. Socks at home and a urea-based cream at night handle most cases before they split.
When dryness is not just winter
See a doctor if you have well-defined red scaly patches that itch persistently, cracks that bleed, or dryness that does not improve at all after three weeks of a proper routine. Eczema and psoriasis both flare in winter and both need more than a moisturiser. Thyroid problems also cause stubborn dry skin, and that is a blood test, not a cream.
Common questions
When should I switch to my winter routine?
When your skin tells you, usually late October or early November in most of Pakistan. Do not wait until it is flaking. It is much easier to prevent a damaged barrier than to repair one.
Do I need a separate night cream in winter?
Not necessarily. A richer moisturiser applied a little more generously is often enough. Buy a second product only if the first one is genuinely not holding.
My skin is oily but tight in winter. What now?
That is dehydration, not dryness, and they are different. Your skin lacks water, not oil. Keep a light texture, add a hydrating serum, and make sure your cleanser is not stripping.
Can I use vitamin C in winter?
Yes, and you should. Winter does not pause pigmentation. Pair it with a richer moisturiser if it feels drying on its own.
Is sunscreen really necessary on a foggy Lahore morning?
Yes. Fog and smog scatter light, they do not block UVA. You are still getting a dose.
