Glutathione Serum Side Effects: What Actually Happens to Your Skin

Green EL TESSA Glutathione Serum dropper bottle with a pearl on a beige surface

Quick answer: Topical glutathione serum has mild side effects, mainly stinging or redness in the first week, and it does not change your natural skin colour. The serious risks come from glutathione injections and from unlabelled lightening creams that hide steroids, hydroquinone or mercury. Patch-test, use sunscreen daily, and see a doctor if skin burns or thins.

Glutathione is the most searched brightening ingredient in Pakistan right now, and it is also the most misunderstood. Search glutathione serum side effects and every result you get is a foreign medical site writing for a foreign audience — usually about injections, not serums. This article is written for the version actually sold here.

What does glutathione do for skin?

Glutathione is an antioxidant your body already produces. In skincare it is used to interrupt melanin production, which is what makes it useful for pigmentation, dark spots and uneven skin tone. It is the active in our Glutathione Serum for Pigmentation, a topical serum.

What it does not do is change your complexion. Your base skin colour is genetic. Anything sold as a colour-changing treatment is either lying to you or contains something that should not be on your face. That distinction matters, because almost every side effect people report comes from the second category, not from glutathione itself.

Is a glutathione serum as risky as an injection?

This is the single most important thing to understand, and it is why foreign search results confuse people.

Glutathione injections and drips carry real, documented risks — they are an unlicensed use in most countries, and problems reported include kidney and thyroid problems, serious skin reactions and dangerous infections from non-sterile technique (Sonthalia et al., Dermatology Practical & Conceptual, 2018). In Pakistan these are often given in salons rather than clinics. That is a medical decision and not something any skincare brand should encourage.

A topical glutathione serum is a different product with a different risk profile. It sits on the skin. It does not enter your bloodstream in any meaningful amount. The realistic side effects are ordinary skincare ones:

  • Mild stinging or redness in the first week, especially if your barrier is already damaged from scrubs or skin-lightening creams
  • Purging or small breakouts if the formula is heavy and your skin is oily
  • Irritation when layered with strong acids on the same night
  • No effect at all if you skip sunscreen — sunlight rebuilds pigment faster than any serum can break it down

If a topical serum is burning your face, that is not glutathione working. That is a formulation problem or a barrier problem, and you should stop.

Where it acts Risks reported Our advice
Topical glutathione serum On the skin surface Mild stinging or redness, occasional purging Patch-test, sunscreen daily
Glutathione injections and drips Whole body Kidney and thyroid problems, serious skin reactions and infections reported (Sonthalia et al., 2018, cited above) A medical decision; we do not encourage it
Unlabelled lightening cream Skin, may absorb Steroids, hydroquinone or mercury found in such products Avoid; buy only products with a full ingredient list

What else can be in a skin-lightening cream?

The genuine danger in the Pakistani market is not glutathione. It is what gets mixed with it in unregulated skin-lightening products sold in general stores and on marketplaces:

  • Steroids (clobetasol is common) — fast visible lightening, then thinning skin, visible capillaries, and rebound pigmentation worse than where you started
  • Hydroquinone above legal limits — can cause ochronosis, a blue-grey darkening that is very hard to reverse
  • Mercury compounds — still found in imported skin-lightening creams; this is a neurological and kidney risk, not a cosmetic one (World Health Organization: mercury and health)

These products are also the reason "glutathione side effects" gets searched so often. People experience damage from an adulterated cream and attribute it to the ingredient named on the front.

How to protect yourself: buy sealed products from a brand that publishes its ingredient list (here is how to read a skincare ingredient list), refuses to promise a colour change, and gives you an honest timeline. If a product promises a visible change of skin colour in seven days, the promise itself is the warning.

How to use a glutathione serum safely

1. Patch test on the jawline for two nights before using it on your whole face.

2. Start at night, every other night, and build up to daily once your skin is comfortable.

3. Never on the same night as glycolic acid or retinol while you are still adjusting. Alternate instead.

4. Sunscreen every morning, without exception. This is not optional advice. Without SPF you are undoing the work daily, and that is the real reason most people conclude "it did nothing".

5. Give it 6 to 8 weeks. Pigmentation fades slowly and unevenly, and the oldest marks always go last.

6. Photograph your skin before you start, in the same light, and do not look again for six weeks. Memory is unreliable; photographs are not.

When should you stop and see a doctor?

Stop using any brightening product and get medical advice if you see spreading redness, persistent burning, skin that feels thin or shiny, visible small blood vessels, or patches that are getting darker rather than lighter. Those are signs of steroid damage, not of an active working.

What we make, and what we refuse to claim

Our glutathione brightening serum is a topical serum for pigmentation and uneven tone. It does not change your natural skin colour, and we will not describe it as if it does. If you want the same work done in the morning as well, vitamin C serum pairs with it — vitamin C by day, glutathione at night — and neither will do anything without SPF 60+ sunblock over the top.

Everything ships sealed, pay on delivery (COD) across Pakistan, with free nationwide delivery. Open the parcel, check the seal, then pay. That is the only honest answer we can give to "is it genuine?" — you check before your money leaves your hand.

If you have used a skin-lightening product that damaged your skin, you are not alone and it is not your fault. Rebuilding the barrier comes first, brightening comes after.
